Episode Notes

‘The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.”’ — Genesis 13:14-17

Episode Transcription

Yesterday during my readings I noticed a story that, at the surface level, appears to be faithfulness.

I am referring to Genesis 12:1-4.

In Genesis 13:6, we read that "the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great" so they had to part ways. And now that I have set the stage, let's read Genesis 13, verses 14 through 17:

‘The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.”’ — Genesis 13:14-17

After they parted and no longer together, which is what God intended in the first place, then God said I give you this land. Even though Abram only acted partially faithful, God already knew how things would turn out, and ensured things would go as He intended. God was still faithful to Abram. His plan still came to pass, and not even Abram could stop it.

Moving into Matthew 12, I see this continued theme. Three times will you read that "something greater is here." Jesus is referring to Himself. He is something greater. He walked this earth for a reason. There was a plan. A great story of redemption. He wasn't here by accident. He was here for a reason. He is something greater. When humanity turned and continues to turn from God and rejoices in sinning, Jesus still chose to bear the cross on behalf of our sin so that a path could be paved for us to be viewed as white as snow by the Father. He is faithful. He is something greater.

Rest in the fact that this truth can be applied to anything. He is greater. We must become less, and He must become more. He is greater than every trial you will ever face, and no that does not mean you won’t endure trials… but that does mean that He is still God. His is still LORD of all. He is still sovereign. He is still good. He is greater.

I want to share a resource with you. While I was doing my studying today, I found a lab by John Piper from Desiring God that discusses 2 Timothy 2:11-13. Now no, I did not discuss those verses but if draw connections, they can relate to what I discussed today. John Piper questions the famous idea pulled out of context from those verses that “if we are faithless, does that mean that He remains faithful to us.” If you have twelve extra minutes today, I highly recommend you check out this resource for further study. I will link to it in the show notes.

With that said, I’m gonna close out our devo for today. As you go throughout your day, remember He is something greater. Have a great day.
