For today’s Scripture of the Day we will be in the Book of Psalms chapter 117, which reads:
“Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol Him, all you peoples. For great is His love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD.” — Psalms 117
I had the honor of preaching over this Psalm at a lock-in at my home church in Buna, TX — CBC or Central Baptist Church. It was around midnight when I preached over this Psalm, and I wanted to share the key points of the devotional for today’s Scripture of Day.
- For this to be the shortest Psalm in the Bible, it hits the big picture.
- I got three points: one what and two whys.
- What are we called to do: as followers of Christ, we are called to praise the LORD.
- Gentiles included. All should know and love the amazing and unfathomable grace of such a good Father.
- We are called to praise Him highly, enthusiastically, and with our complete lives. Let Him be first. In school, sports, relationships... let it all be glorifying to God and praise His Name.
- Why are we called to praise Him? Because His love is great towards us.
- If you dig into the Hebrew, you will find the repetitive emphasis of God’s great love. His prevailing, His mighty love.
- Checkmate, it trumps all else — it wins, nothing else can compete to God’s love, it beats death, hell, sin, and the grave... He wins.
- John 15:13 — “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
- He loves us to the point of laying down His life for us... He loves you.
- Lastly, again why are we called to praise Him? Because His faithfulness endures forever.
- His faithfulness is seen all throughout Scripture, but we are going to look in Lamentations right now because it’s so good.
- Even in the middle of the destruction of Jerusalem, the Prophet Jeremiah, who is believed to be the writer of Lamentations, can still see the faithfulness of the LORD.
- Lamentations 3:22-23 — “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
- Truly I tell you, He is faithful.
- To recap, what are we called to do? — enthusiastically praise the LORD
- Why are we called to praise Him, to worship His Name?
- His love is great towards us
- His faithfulness endures forever
One more time, let’s read Psalms 117:
“Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol Him, all you peoples. For great is His love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD.” — Psalms 117
